    Blank Screen during startup

    Locked

    by rjgriff ·

I have a Gateway G6-450 Pentium II computer. About a month ago when I start up my computer, it starts fine and then goes to a blank screen with a hourglass. I can not move the hourglass or get off the blank screen. This lasts about two minutes. I can not figure out why this happens and what I can do about it. Any suggestions? I have downloaded programs but can not figure out if one of these is the problem.

You don’t mention your OS, but I gather it’s Windows based.

I would restart your machine in safe mode. From there check your hardware devices carefully and fix/remove any problems.

Then do basic system maintenance. Scandisk, delete temporary files, defrag. Check your startup items and get rid of the things you don’t need.

After that restart. If the issue persists, then I would remove the newer programs one at a time until you find the culprit affecting your performance/stability.

      Good luck…hope this helps!

I run in Windows 98. I have tried this and it did not help resolve the problem.

Scan for viruses, download and run ad-aware, run scan disk, clean up the hard drive (delete *.tmp, and the temp directory), and run defrag. Does it shut down ok or lock up requiring powering off?
CTRL-ALT-DEL should show you whats trying to run, but not always. Run msconfig and see whats in the startup list.
      Good luck
