Booting w/98 after taking off NT Network

By Casemaker ·
Hi,I went on a call to service a desktop that is running W/98 and is on a network. I am not familiar with networking and how it is all set up. The client attempted to run a backup and backup to a tape drive that is internal. When she did this scandisk automatically came up and required that she run it. She did and chose the fix it option. When she tries to reboot it freezes at the W logo. I took the system off the network and brought it back to my shop and used fix it to run another scandisk. I also choose to fix it. It told me that some clusters where bad and that it would move the information to a good cluster and mark that one bad. It also corrected and changed the names of files and directories to Dir00001-Dir00028 and File0001-File0113.When scandisk finished it reported 24 invalid directory entries were removed, 63 invalid directory entries were corrected, 55 lost directories were reinstated, 1976 lost clusters were saved as files and 653 bad clusters were patched. Now when I try to reboot it sits at

It sounds like the root directory and the Windos directory were two that were found to be bad by scandisk. (When scandisk wants to make changes, I always like to ask for "More Info" so I can see what files are involved).

I would boot from floppy and reinstall Windows.

It cannot find the System files to start boot-up,due to not beint connected to the network,if she plans to use withe out being connected to the network it will have to be reconfigured. She may have been using a dual boot and the system start up file were on NT,you would have gotten a error message that it could not locate the files.Insert the windows98 boot disk and install the files from it.

I don't mean to doubt a client but it sounds like her system went down hard when the hard drive heads were on the drive. What kind of backup program does she use? Is this their administater's PC that backs up the NT server to the tape backup in this PC? 55 lost directories is huge. The scandisk that runs when your computer hangs up and is not the thorough version that you can run from system tools. The standard version does not always find all of the cross-linked files. I don't like to fix the files on boot-up or the standard version of scandisk any more. Run the thorough version and fix from there. I ran standard scan disk last week and then defragged after that for maintance. The defrag hung up. I ran thorough scandisk and started fixing and uninstalling whole programs as best I could but because I had started defrag I gave up after two hours one fix led to another. I fdisked and reformatted. Hope that helps
