Booting W/98 after taking off NT Network

By Casemaker ·
Now when I try to reboot it sits at verifying dmi pool data and won't boot into W. Using a W/98 boot disk it asks for himem.sys,dblbuff.sys,ifshlp.sys and win.com. I copied them as well. I noticed on my system thart these files are in the Windows directory but there is no Windows directory on the machine I am trying to fix. I have copied the files to the root of c and to the Win98 directory which is the only Windows reference to a directory.I know this is dragged out but I want to give as much info as possible.
Thanking you in advance for your input!!

These files are all refereing to the winnt boot files. At this point I would do a backup of the drive to keep the applications that are needed and then go ahead and do Fdisk to reconfigure the machine to run WIN98.

It sounds like to me that the Windows directory is gone. look in the win98 directory and see if it is the CABs. If it is you may need to do an install from there. If the Windows directory is gone completely then it will take a complete reinstall.

You may be able to run sfc.exe from a dos prompt if you can find it in your windows directory. If you can run it and you have your 98 disk or the cab files on hard drive, you should be able to restore all your system files.

Why has no one asked this tech to run a virus scan (even from a boot disk)? SHAME! This activity is screaming virus. In the unlikely event that it isnt, you can install the drive as a slave in another machine, recover the data, the reinstall the system (on the original box). ANY OTHER METHOD IS ASKING FOR TROUBLE LATER! If you need more info email me at billcassada@hotmail.com
