A user seems to be having trouble opening a URL in Netscape. She gets an error, 'page cannot be displayed'... she can copy and paste the URL to IE and it will open. How can she have NetScape as her main browser vs. Internet Explorer? I know she can check the preferences in Netscape Navigator to specify the home page location, but she wants all of her links to be opened up in NetScape automatically. What are we doing wrong?

Many sites do not work properly in all browsers, especially Netscape 4. Most sites are tested in IE since that's what most people use. Those of us who use other browsers have to put up with their poor coding that isn't cross-browser.

To make links open in Netscape, make it the default browser. That should be in her preferences somewhere, depending on what version she has.

If she wants the best in compatibility and really likes Netscape, have her check out Mozilla. It is the browser the new Netscape (6+) is based on and I have found it works with more sites than Netscape (esp. NN 4) does. The look and feel is similar. And it works on Unix/Linux.

What she has to do is, change the file type handler to another program. In this case a .htm* files to Netscape from Internet Exlorer. TO do this in Windows 98. FOllow the steps:
Start > Run > Explorer > OK
From the Menus: Tools > Folder Options
In the new dialogue: Click 'File Types' tab, from here on the list select the type of files you want it to be opened by Netscape, choose one from the menu and click 'Edit' and the rest is self explanatory.

Cheers :-D
Thanks
