call waiting not working

By hunterdust99 ·
When I connect to the internet, I keep call waiting enabled, because unlike too many socially challenged people, I feel that a live human conversation is more important that 99% of the internet surfing that is done.

Unfortunately, my call waitingrarely disconnects, and when it does, the caller has to let it ring a ridiculous amount of times (more than 15 rings) befor it does. Someone suggested that my dial up settings are set to be not sensitive enough. If this is true, how do I change it, and if it isn't, is there a way to change it? I went to the properties of my ISP connection and there is an ADVANCED PORT SETTINGS where I can set a buffer for both transmitting and receiving. IS this the way to corrent this problem, and if not, how can I?

There is no way of doing this in windows. The only thing you can do is get DSL. This will allow you to use your phone line at the same time you're on the internet.

There is SUPPOSED to be a way. I WANT to be disconnected if the phone rings. And that is what normal call waiting is supposed to do to a regular dial up ISP. I am NOT asking how I can talk and be online at the same time. That is not what I want. My question is why isn't call waiting doing its job and disconnecting me? It used to a couple years ago, and for some reason, it seemed to stop.

Older modems used to disconnect when call waiting kicked in because they didn't know what else to do. In modern modems the error correction is greatly improved and the modems consider the "call waiting beep" to be nothing more than line noise. They can easily continue communicating during, what they consider "a minor irritation".

Check with your local telephone company and see if they offer a service that will notify you when people call while you are online. Here it's called Internet Call Director, but may have a different name in your area. This program (it goes on your PC) will pop a window up on your screen when someone calls and let you click a button to hang up the modem and answer the phone.

If you are using an older modem it may not be functioning correctly. 3 things that you can do: 1- update your modem drivers to the newest version. 2- Replace your modem with a new one that handles call waiting, caller ID . . . 3- Buy a $40 device called "Hotcall". It works well for me at home with call waiting. It's an external device that connects between your phone jack and your computer. It works with call waiting or for $10 more your can get one that works with caller ID too. It can be purchased from Tiger Direct amoung others.

I've run into this same problem since a recent modem upgrade. What happens is that your modem is interpreting the Call-Waiting beep as line noise and ignoring it.

Four options present themselves, none of which I think you'll be happy with:

1) Go to a swap meet and find an old ISA 56K modem (I have one on the shelf that does a good job of this, FYI), and give that a whirl.

2) Get one of those services that the phone company offers.

3) Get another phone line or find another way toaccess the web.

4) Do what I do, pay attention to the speed at which your surfing happens, when it starts to slow down or give errors, disconnect and wait for the phone to ring. Dial *69 if you're too late, and that'll tell you who called (if that service is available in your area, and it may cost each time you use it, too)
