Can a virus remove the partition?

By WizardJ ·
Windows 98 SE computer was working yesterday, but had some files that Spybot couldn't remove (GMT\Banners\4401.6\) untypeable gibberish in directories under the 4401.6 so I couldn't boot to command prompt and manually delete the cr*p. Stupid Gator stuff, I hate it! But now this morning, no C: drive, boot to diskette, fdisk says no partitions defined. ARGHH! What next? any hints?

The virus more or less has gotten to boot partition and removed the MBR,you will need to run the anti-virus software to detect and remove virus using command prompt
You will then need to create a new Win 98 startup disk, because the first one has the virus files on it

The only other option will be to fdisk the system and do a fresh install, try to backup any files that you can for the drive

Go to; www.grc.com Then find the freeware downloads files, look for Fix-CIH but do some reading there concerning the CIH Virus and how to use the file to fix it. He has a full history about the virus and his fix.

I have used the fix and it works.
