Can Get Your Help To Get A LapTop to Go?

By blls009 ·
I have a Sharp Personel Computor System 1.0B, with 640K main Mem. 0K Extended mem. Turn it on and it starts running MS_DOS Himem testing, comes up with HIMeM Dos XMS driver version 3.10 - 9/30/93 is not installed, HMA not avalable: Loading DOS low.to a C prompt. Bought this at a yard sale for 25 dollars. and want to give to kid for games. The guy bought it from said that before he sold it, he erased everything by formatting the drive, and that I would have to load DOS on to it. The versionof DOS that I have is 6.22. Is there a way I can get this caveman machine operational and if so how any and all suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
Betty

Can not find much on the web about it. But you should boot to a dos boot disk, like 6.2 and at the c: prompt type fdisk. You will or should get a menu that will let you create partitions and let you see the partitions there. If there is no partitions you should create one to full size. Then reboot with the floopy in the drive then format the drive with the /s /u condition. This will make it bootable. Now if its a 486 you can load 95 on it, but just the basics not the full install. I wish I had it, I could make a great linux travel box.

You prob. wont have XMS /EMS because there is no extended / expanded mem. Try anything earlier than 93 (including windows 3.1)

Sounds to me as if you would be better off loading an earlier version of DOS. 3.3 would be about right for the age of that PC, after all it doesn't need (and probably cannot handle) all the 'extras' there are in the later versions.
With only 640K of memory to play with you want as much room left for applications as you can get.
I wouldn't even consider trying to load Windows, of any variety - even 3.11, there wouldn't be any room left to do anything.
Dos 3.3 wouldn't take up much space - I think it was available on a couple of 5.25 inch floppies originally - and would do all you need unless you can find a way of stuffing some more memory in. You should be able to acquire that version of DOS from somewhere.

Start it up from a bootable floppy of the os your
going to load. (95,98 ect) You can use 95, or
98 but it will have the be a minimal install. You
just don't have enough memory to load a
bunch of goodies on boot. If you can increase
its memory I would do that. But back to the os.
Once it has booted on the floppy format the
hard drive. use the format c: /s and it will
install the three system files that it needs to
boot. Now to get more on the drive. A company
called backpack had a cdrom that access
through the parallel port. They are not that
expensive. You might even find one on ebay.
You can build a boot disk that uses their
drivers. Then you can install a base of 95 or
98. I sold a sharp laptop not long agoon ebay
and that's how I got it loaded with 95.

Good Luck Lee
