“Cannot copy file”

by bigglesguy . Updated 17 years, 4 months ago

Hi, I’m trying to copy a folder full of important files and subfolders to a USB pen drive.

When I tried it just gave the unhelpful response “Cannot copy file”.

I then tried copying and pasting right there on the hard drive, expecting to see “copy of file” – but got the same error.

I’m running Windows XP, 1gb of RAM, all up to date.

I’ve tried copying some smaller folders and that works – thing is I’ve already copied over a folder of over 1GB and the one I really need is only about 720MB, so I doubt it’s because it’s too big or anything. The folder is marked “read only” but so was the other one that copied OK.

None of the files are in use, no other software is running and a search of the net doesn’t reveal anything related to a simple and direct “cannot copy file” message. No networks or fancy stuff are involved, I can’t even copy it from one part of the same drive to another.

What gives?

A.
