Cannot detect modem

By jim_steven ·
I have a PC with an internal modem yet the driver for it has been lost. I have just downloaded a driver from the internet of the right spec to floppy disk yet the computer will still not recognise it with the modem. How can I restore use of the modem? It has an Ambient MD5628D-L-A chipset and I got a driver from loper.intel.com/design/modems/support/drivers.htm.

Try manually installing the modem and drivers,it would be best to use a generic modem driver to get the modem up,then update the modem driver using the Device manager.

Delete all instances of modem from computer and then reboot computer, the Add New Hardware wizard should start and choose to select the modem from list and then click have disk, proceed to follow the onscreen instrucions.

Boot into safe mode. Under device manager, remove all of your modems and COM ports, and uninstall the modem drivers. Reboot the computer. If the modem works, the OS will detect it as a new hardware, and will then ask you for drivers. If the modem is not detected, Reseat the modem (in a different slot, if possible) and try again (restarting the computer). If it still is not detected, your modem is the problem, not the software. Good luck.

Some early pnp modem designs required that you install the drivers from a setup program before you actually installed the modem. If the driver set you have has a setup file, try physically removing the modem from the system, running the setup program, then putting the modem back in. On startup, Windows should correctly identify and install it.
