Cannot Free Up Travan Tape for Reuse

By DouglasB ·
Running Windows 2003 Small Business Server. When running NTbackup I can't get the system to free up a tape so I can use it again. I go to the Restore Option, click on the Tape Drive, but when I go to click on media tools that option is greyed out. I have other tapes that work, and this tape was working so I don't believe the tape itself is defective.

i would try to figure out what Media set the tape belonged to. I would check the properties of gthat media set. perhaps the tape is not yet eligible for rewrite. like maybe property is no reusing tape until it is a week old or something. you probaly could get import to work...

It does have a write protect tab, but that is unlocked. This is a tape I used in another server configuration so it does not belong to a set.

Check capacity or type of tape. Travan drives are read compatible with older type tapes but will not write them (e.g TR5 drive will read TR04 tapes but may not write them).

you could try wiping the tape with a strong magnet.
then when the backup software reads the beginning of the tape there is no data and it should be unlocked.
( if what is on the tape isn't needed )

Says on the tape to NOT bulk erase, will this render the tape unuseable?

We use a Certance Travan and unless we stick the tape for a period of time [tape will sound like its rewinding] NT won't see the tape. Quirky and annoying but thats what we see with the Certance drives.
