cannot install scsi-scanner

By europanorama ·
i have different scsi-scanners. microtek E6, Agfa Arcus, 2 hp scanjet IIc and IIcx. i tried out the microtek and agfa. i tried out scsi-isa-card ms-pnr(microtek) with E6 and ARCUS without success. installed scansoftware plus image-program(irfanview), scanner and ms-pnr-scsi-controller. in device-manager no error are reported.

i checked the irqs. e6 says irq 10 is default but it is not free. irq 9 is free. in bios-cmos-setup i changed pci-iq-pnp to legal isa. both settings did not work. scanner test says it is not connected. i have the similar cables, one with a terminater-piece(can be detached). i tried out both cables with and without terminator. the scanner is the only scsi-source. i have a second isa-scsi-card from a friend: hp scanjet with the same chip (ncr53c400a) but did not try it out. should i manually exchange the irq 10 settings to irq9 and use no 10 for the scanner? on the the scanners there are settings from 0 to 9. i could not find manuals. only for cash.i urgently need the arcus because of the slide/film-scanner. i have socket 7-board with p200mmx,128 mb ram, 2 gb hd, winme. no problems reported from nsystemworks.

cannot install scsi-scanner

You have a few issues to contend with here. First and foremost, make sure that the SCSI controller card in your system is functioning correctly. If it's ISA, you'll need to manually configure it to an open IRQ and memory address. Make sure you have the correct and current drivers installed. Once it is functioning correctly, you can move on...but until it is, you won't get anywhere. If you are having trouble with it, looking at a PCI plug and play scsi controller may not be a bad idea.

The numbers on the scanner are not IRQs, they are SCSI ID addresses. These also need to be unique. Generally the scanner will be set for 4 or 5 (0,1,2 are generally HDs, 3 the CD Rom, 6 a Zip or Jaz...though this is only a guideline, not a requirement by any means).

Since the scanner is the last device in the SCSI chain (the only device actually) it should be terminated.

By the way, I use an ARCUS 2 at home and it's a truly outstanding and superior scanner...

Good luck!

i installed:
1. scanningsoftware
2. picture-program irfanview
3. scsi-controller
4. scanner
no errors in device manager
irq 9 of possible 9 to 12 is free.
i changed from irq-pci pnp to legal isa and back. both did not work.
should i set the terminator if its only one device?
should i reinstall all or only scsi-software if i change the jumpers on the scanner. it was set to 6.
where can i download for freea manual for agfa arcus? i think umax was the producer.

where are all the scsi-experts: i still cannot install the scanner.
1. i changed the pc. both have a network-card for cable-modem(internet).
should i take this out before installing scanner/scsi-card?
2. in installed microtek e6, first scanwizard-software, then scsi-controller ms-pnr and finally the scanner itself.
3. in bios i changed irq 10 to isa/eisa, irq 0 stays at pci/pnp.
4. no errors on device manager for microtek and scsi
5. no new irq-entrys at all. is this normal?
6. maybe thescanner and/or cable(tested two) are defective.
7. should there be a terminator if scnner is the only device?
8. scanner is set to port 6 or whatever you call this.
scanner, cable and card came together.

SCSI connections and cable lenghth are critical, clean with GOOD contact cleaner. I have had best results with Adaptec SCSI PCI cards ( 2940 or better). Many scanner utilities are 16 bit apps and don't work well with 32 bit OSs (you dont spec OS). With PCI cards try different slots (busmaster conflicts).
