Cannot nslookup/ping netbios name or ip address of child DC

By gman ·
I set up a child domain, ( of parent domain, ( I followed the instructions to prep DNS on the parent domain DNS server and to prep DNS on the child server prior to dcpromoing the child server, (server2) to be a DC of the child domain.

From the parent domain controller the issue I have is that I can nslookup ( and it tells me the servers and IP addresses correctly. I can nslookup ( and it tells me the servers and IP addresses correctly.

But I cannot nslookup the child server name itself (server2) or it's IP address. I know I'm missing something but I'm not sure what to do.

I've tried a few things and they didn't work. Does anybody have any ideas.

Thanks in advance.

DNS issues

Can you see a ForestDNSZones and DomainDNSZones partition under the
child AD 2003 domain inside the DNS management console?

Note that you will need to be be logged in as an enterprise adminsitator to see those zones.

Also check how you are handling delegation of the zones between the servers. You do have DNS running on the child server correct?

If they are there, then get on the child domain as an EA, and run the command netdiag /v /fix.
