Cannot open pdf files

By jardinier ·
I have Acrobat Reader 5.1 installed on my computer. However when I click on a hyperlink to a pdf file from anywhere on the internet, the file does not open, but instead I just see the message: "Done" at the bottom left of my screen.

Check for updates within Acrobat Reader. The updates solved this issue.

Try this:

Go to Edit > Preferences > General > Options
Remove "Check Mark" from Display PDF in Browser
Press Ok
Close window
Go to the browser and try again to view the PDF.
Select "Open it" and a second window should open and display the PDF

Also what I meant by updating is within the current version that you have. I believe it is in the help menu and select updates.

To resolve this issue, follow the steps in the appropriate section below:
Upgrade to Internet Explorer 5.5
Internet Explorer 5.5 has corrected the issue of displaying a blank page when retrieving a PDF file using the POST method. Upgrading to Internet Explorer version 5.5 resolves this issue, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie
Internet Explorer 4.0, 4.01 and 5
If you are using Adobe Acrobat Reader version 3.0 or earlier, upgrade to version 4.0 or later. If you are already using version 4.0 or later, follow these steps: 1. Change the security level used by Internet Explorer to medium or lower. To view .pdf files in Internet Explorer 4.0, 4.01 or 5, the security must be set to medium or lower. To change the security level, use the following steps.

NOTE: If you do not want to reduce the security level for this zone, skip to step 2.a. Start Internet Explorer, and then click Internet Options on the View menu. For Internet Explorer 5.0, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
b. Click the Security tab, click Internet Zone in the Zone box, click either Medium (More Secure) or Low, and then click OK.

2. Download the .pdf file, and then open it using the Adobe Acrobat Reader program.

Decrease the Safety Level
Change the security level used by Internet Explorer to medium or lower. To do so, follow these steps: 1. On the View menu, click Options.
2. On the Security tab, click Safety Level.
3. Click Medium, click OK, and then click OK again.
4. Quit Internet Explorer.
5. Download the .pdf file, and then open it using the Adobe Acrobat Reader program.

As stated I already have Acrobat 5.1
The current version 7 requires at least Windows 2 K with SP 2, and I am using 98 SE, so I can't update my version of Acrobat Reader.
I have IE 6 with SP 1, but I use Firefox Browser. I guess I could try using IE 6 except that I hate it.

Check your file associations and make sure that the .pdf extensions are, in fact, set to Adobe Acrobat. So many programs "***-U-Me" that just because you install it, that every thing under the sun should be associated with it instead of the program the file was intended to be openned with (example, Nero, Real Player and the list goes on and on) so you end up with files with the wrong programs attemptingto open them, and the programs don't know what the heck to do with the file when called upon.
Go to the control panel, Folder options, select the "File Types" tab, then Scrol down to the pdf extension (and check others while you are there, cool what you learn) highlight it, then select change, then select adobe accrobat if it's not aready selected. As far asr using Firefox, you got me on that one. I've never tried it. Good Luck
