cannot read boot file

By mtlphl ·
I just ran Norton Antivirus and this error: <Unable to read boot record on drive C Check to make sure the drive is ready> I get the same error for drive D. It reads the Master boot(s) just fine.
previously tonite the computer was a bit sluggish, had difficulty closing programs, difficulty rebooting, getting <start> to pop up. I ran MSscandisk then MSdefrag then Norton A/V and got this error.
What is wrong, how do I fix it?
I am a bit of a novice so if you have suggestions, please be detailedwith your instructions.
Thanks for your help

try disabling Norton AV. if u are an advanced user then check the mother board for HDD write protect and disable it. if u had opened the case check for the HDD cable if it is firmly fixed. If u have done these then boot with a floppy and check whether u can acess your C or D drive. and try installing (overwriting) ur win OS. This should solve the problem.
