    cannot unc by ip address

    Locked

    by tech_know ·

I am trying to connect to another PC using the following unc… \\ipaddress\share name. However, I get The network path was not found”. I do have the proper credentials so that is not the issue. However, when I put the computer name/ip address in my hosts file I can access the share using this unc…\\computername\share name. The question is…why does the second way work and the ip address does not?

On the computer that you are trying to access.
or the bindings are wrong (only netbios is enabled to the mic and not tcp/ip) or the only protocol installed on that pc is netbeui and there is no tcp/ip installed.

the depends of the os , the path to get to the properties of the nic is different.

if not remove all protocols and client settings from the nic, remove the nic from device manager, and reinstall the nic and protocols.

      Leopold.

Have you verified the IP addresses? Run a command prompt and try pinging to and from both systems IP addresses. “ping 000.000.000.000” Is the TCP/IP protocol bound to the Client?

      Perhaps there’s a firewall issue?

Thanks for the suggestion but I found the problem. It was a Novell client 32 issue. When I patched it the problem went away.
