Can't connect to Internet on Windows XP

By lt1transamgt ·
I have a Windows XP Home edition Compaq Laptop and I am not able to open a webpage. I conect through a cable modem and also tried the T1 at work and it's the same thing. I am able to connect to AOL and read email but even there no web pages will load. I am also able to run Norton live update and that connects without problem. I am also not able to ping. I can't understand why I am able to use the network card to connect to aol and live update but can't get a web page. I get the page cannot be displayed error. I tried changing the internet connection settings but that doesn't work either. Please help.

Presumably you are using a different computer to post your question here! It sounds as though you may have a DNS problem - ie you type in a web url into your browser address bar but it goes nowhere because you are not connecting to your ISP's DNS server to translate the domain name into an IP address.
Try typing this into your browser:
If it takes you to, then there's a good chance your browser is functioning OK and you have a DNS issue. If not, you may well have a browser problem,

If your cable modem was correctly set up, it should handle all DNS requests and you TCP/IP properties (Network Connections/Local Area Connection/)should be set to automatically obtain DNS server addresses. You might want to start by calling your ISP Help Line and see if they can walk you through checking the settings on the modem.

Try this first then post comments back if still a problem

Theres Your Problem AOL (Worst Internet)

But Have You Checked The LAN TCP/IP Settings
And Verified It Is Connected To The HUB Or Computer Directly Rather Then Indirectly It May Verify The LAN Connection But Not The IP To Command To Share The Internet/ Have You Shared The Internet Via The LAN/TCP/IP Also Have You Got Antivirus Like NAV2003 Internet Security Or A Firewall Not Giving Access To The Internet Check Them Out I Will Get Back To You

Thanks for the help guys but I wasn't able to get to the website using the ip address and I tried removing AOL and still didn't work. I also rechecked the dns settings and the connections. There was no firewall either but I was still having problems. I ended up reformatting the computer and installing a clean version. There were other problems with the computer so I decided to fix everything at once. Thanks again.
