can't find IP address

By julesgoddard ·
Trying to remotely assist a colleague, using wireless laptop and XP. Suddenly error message to say 'windows could not find IP address'. Tried ipconfig/release and /renew but no luck.
They can access the internet but not our work server which worked ok until Sunday.
Any ideas please?

A couple of thoughts.

You say the other guy is remote. Is it possible he's hooked to something acting as a DHCP server and he's getting an address not allowed on your network?

Is it possible he's hard coded an address?

Is the address he's getting a legitimate one for your DHCP / network?

Hi
The user has not changed any settings, (would not know how to). They now have internet access ok, son has an XBOX which is online.
Seems to be an issue aquiring IP address when trying to logon using terminal server /VPN which were working fine until Saturday.
