can't map to server

By robbiev ·
currently running winnt server, have win98 machined trying to map. server can acess all machines and folders, but recently all pc's can't access the mapped drives. hard drive on server was making funny noises and i am planning on replaceing it. But would this cause the server to act as if it was't up and running? other pc's can actually ping and see shared folders on server but can't access them.

Yes, a bad hdd can cause a problem with users trying to access mapped files.

The problem appears to not make sense because the server is partially operational, but once anyone tries to access a specific portion of the hdd that has gone bad...then you have the noises and the problem as the hdd tries to re-read that portion of the platters. If the "shared data" is physically where the bad sectors are located, then it makes perfect sense.

I don't know the answer yet but I have the same problem with a Win2000 server using Active Directory. When I go to map or share a drive on a Win98 client, the global access list stops reading users after the letter 'J' It continues to show groups but not users. I'll be back with an answer to both problems soon.
