Can't ping anything on LAN

By bradq ·
Hi. We have a new Gateway laptop with Windows XP Home running on our network (Yikes). Its setup on our LAN with TCP/IP but can't ping anything.
ip: 192.168.100.200
subnet: 255.255.255.0
default: 192.168.100.254

I can ping anything on the Internet and browse the Internet. I can't ping the default gateway or any other machines on the LAN. I know its not the cable because I can unplug the network cable from the laptop and put in another machine and the other pc will work ok.

Is this justa Gateway issue or is something else going on here? I don't want to load up IPX/SPX or any other protocols. I would like to keep everything TCP/IP.

I think you need Win XP Pro. Home version will not work with a domain.

I realize that it wont work on a Domain but I should still be able to ping other machines. The print servers and gateway to the Internet aren't on the domain and I still can't ping them either.

Are you useing IPSec on the LAN? The other LAN hosts may be configured not to respond to non-IPSec communication.
Also, are you trying to ping by hostname or IP address? If pining y IP works but not hostname, then the issue is name resolution.Just a couple of thoughts,

No. They are all Windows 98 computers that can all ping each other. I can't ping by hostname or ip address from the new laptop. The only thing I can ping from the laptop is its own address "192.168.100.200" and nothing more on the LAN.

You should be able to use XP Home and ping your local gateway. Something in the tcp/ip properties are not set up properly.

See also:

http://www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/network/ethernet/winxp/index.xml.ID=ConfiguringTCPIP

and follow the "ping" links for further troubleshooting.

If all the above fails, then you may have a network adapter issue. Sounds like the nic in your computer may not be specifically geared toward WinXP and that you only have partial connectivity

----
Here is a series of ping commands to use in finding where a problem occurs on a local area network. Run them in the order shown, and don?t go on to the next command until all of the previous commands work properly. In this example:

The computer being tested is named Winxp, with IP address 192.168.100.101.
There?s another computer on the network, named Win98, with IP address 192.168.100.123
Substitute the appropriate IP addresses and computer names for your network.

Command.... Target.... What Ping Failure Indicates

ping 127.0.0.1.... Loopback address.... Corrupted TCP/IP installation

ping localhost.... Loopback name.... Corrupted TCP/IP installation
ping 192.168.100.101.... This computer?s IP address.... Corrupted TCP/IP installation

ping winxp.... This computer?s name .... Corrupted TCP/IP installation

ping 192.168.100.123.... Another computer?s IP address.... Bad hardware or NIC driver

ping win98.... Another computer?s name....
NetBIOS name resolution failure

Nothing in TCP/IP is configured incorrectly. This is the first one i've seen in 4 years that does this. Although - ping 192.168.100.123.... Another computer?s IP address.... Bad hardware or NIC driver (this may be the case considering its a Gateway). I will call them and see if they can find out why its doing it.

That's a good question. That is why I posted this question. Once again...

Cant ping anything at all on LAN...pc's, print servers, gateway to Internet.

Can ping DNS servers 216.171.129.13 and www.dell.com, etc.

Never seen anything like thisbefore.
