can’t ping LAN but can access Internet
Lockedby bradq · about 20 years, 10 months ago
Hi. I have something weird happening. I have a computer with ip address 192.168.1.154 and subnet mask 255.255.255.192. The gateway is 192.168.1.129. All the pc’s on the LAN can ping each other and the gateway except for this one.
Its a Compaq portable with XP Pro on it. I cannot ping anything on the LAN (not even the gateway). However, I can access the Internet and ping public ip’s on the Internet.
I thought it may be Norton Internet Security but I uninstalled it and still have the sameproblem. I can’t find any other firewall software installed. This happens when using the integrated nic and also when trying to use a pc card nic. Any ideas?

I would suggest you try checking the subnet mask, so that it matches with ur LAN.

2 things; check to see if the network cable from the pc to the hub is OK, also try another port on the hub( not the #1 port.
or change the cable it might be a cross over cable.Just take a known good cable from another pc that is working.
Rememberstart from one point and check, try another and check, try-

It isn’t a cabling issue because it has this same problem with a wireless card which the access point is plugged into a seperate port from the port the integrated nic plugs into on the switch.

I’ve re-installed the driver and TCP/IP. I was hoping to not have to re-install the OS but have already thought of that unless there is a “quick fix”.

I has to be a routing problem. Type netstat -r at a prompt and paste the routing table here. We might be able to figure it out from there.

I don’t see anything wrong with your table besides the ‘metric’ part. Do all your other machines have the same ‘metric’ value (30) for the top line of your routing table?
If not try changing your mask to 255.255.255.0Another shot in the dark would be to make sure your windows built-in firewall is disabled.

Can every other machine you login to on the LAN get to the internet? Also, you may be able to browse the net without being able to get ping returns…I am unable to ping any addresses outside of my WAN (like http://www.microsoft.com) but I can most defintely surf there. I think its an aspect of how my firewall is setup.

Yeah all the others work fine. This particular machine can’t ping other nodes on the LAN. It also can’t access them through Windows Explorer or telnet or any other way at all.

Have u tried by interchanging the machines I mean connect ur PC to the port or position where any other PC is working fine. This is how u may come to know about the problem if its is with ur machine(Hardware or software) or with the port and cablepreviously u were connected with. After this u can take any approprite action accordingly.
