Cant' reach certain websites

By paperclip101 ·
For about 3 months now, I have been unable to access certain websites such as the home page at microsoft.com, (I can reach the update page, but if I try to go to any other part of Microsofts's website, I'm out of luck), symantec.com or any of its counterparts (cannot access the Norton anti-virus update section), familytreemaker.com, angelfire.com and numerous others. I've turned cookies on and off and on again, re-installed Windows, checked all the internet settings and even turn ON things that were never ON before, tried turning them back off again too - No luck. At each site I am unable to access, I get the error message "There was no response. The server could be down or is not responding. If you are unable to connect again later, contact the server's administrator."

I am sure the problem is not with my ISP because the problem started with my old ISP. I have recently moved and now have a completely different ISP in another state. The same problem exists here in my new location as did in my o

It sounds to me like you are having a DNS problem and not a ISP problem. Try to run a trace route from the command line and see if you can find out excatly where the link is dying. This is accomplised by just using the built in command "tracert".If the trace works you know at least you are making the trip. Also you could ping the site the next time you get that error and make sure the site is on line. If all else fails put an entry into your hosts file forcing the routing from your machine.

Go to win update page. Download and install ie 5.0. If you already have it, go to add/remove programs then try to uninstall it and click on the repair option. If you are running through a network, make sure , if you run through a proxy server, that you have full web access. You can check with the system admin.

Sounds Like you need an updated browser. How about old DNS settings in Dial-Up Networking Icon for I-net connection. (Right Click on Icon Properties) Also in my expierence when you re-load windows if you don't delete the Windows Directory Some of the same Config settings. Of Course assuming you have 98.

Check your security settings on the Security tab of internet options, assuming your using Internet Explorer. If their set too tight you might not be able to get to some sites.

Good luck.

Replace your modem - it sounds like a communications problem, and this could/should fix it. Modems are very inexpensive these days, and it's easy to do. I also recommend installing IE5 - it fixes some issues with communication as well.
