CD CREATOR (NOT RESPONDING) WHILE BURNIN

By tabron911 ·
I am running Windows 98 SE. I have a 16x Yamaha CD-WR. When burning Audio CD's the software stops responding at track 15. I have to end task each time making the CD-R unuseable. There is a red light that comes on the case also.
I am not sure what the light is trying to tell me.
Perhaps memory???? I have 256 RAM and 60 Gig hard drive.
I seem to begin this problem when I installed DSL.
Once time I disconnected DSL, and the CD burned fine.
The next time even with the DSL disconnected, the program stop responding again. I have disk scanned, and defragmented the hard drive since the problem occured. I have enlarged my partition also. Please help.

I have seen this behavior with the cheaper CDR blanks. I would recommend trying a better quality CDR blank and see if the problem goes away. Hope this helps.

You have not said if the CD RW locks up your computer or gives you an error message. If you lock up you should make sure no other programs are running in the background when you are burning the audio. You should also slow down the burn to 2X to see if that will help. The fact that DSL was running tells me you dont shut down your prorams running in the background so be sure to close, disable or exit everything not needed on your taskbar before you burn music.

Try shutting down ALL of your back ground applications.

(I need to do this on my W98 system with a 4X drive!)

Start by right clicking on the applications in the system tray, and select close.

Then, press "Alt Ctrl Del" and select one application at a time to close.
(Leave Explorer alone)

I have seen this before. The answer about getting good cdr blanks is a good one. You should always get brand name media and you may want to try the audio only cdr's. Now for the fix. You say at track 15 huh? Well I would think that is one of if not the last track on the CD, correct? There is a known issue with some cdr drives not reading at the correct speed all the way to the end of the CDR. Try this. Copy the audio CD from the CDR drive to the CDR drive. It will put it in a temp folder on thehard drive and copy it back. You may want to copy at a slower speed also.

You could also try uninstalling and reinstalling your CD Burning software. If something was *touched* by the DSL's installation application, it could have caused a problem.

When you said after you installed DSL I only think it may have done things because many companies pre-bundle several applications with one another, sometimes adding funtionality, sometimes replacing, some times completely mucking up other parts.

Example:
I installed a soundblaster live sound card, the drivers put TWOdll files into the plugin's directory of winamp, for the Creative Nomad device. There was no warning it would do this, it simply did, and then Winamp had problems playing some of my mp3 files!

Also ... try not useing that 15th track .. try burning a test audio CD with only 14 tracks and see if you get the same behavior on the last track (14).

How long is the whole compliation... the 15 tracks.. whats the total play?

AND.. if you are copying a store bought audio cd, has THIS cd ever copied before? If not, and track 15 is the last, then you may have a copy protected audio cd.

I've run into three CD's so far that I had problems copying or turning into MP3's. The first was Afro Celt Sound System's Volume 3, Further in time. Thelast track would not copy correctly or rip to an MP3.

The CD has copy protection .. I found this because in my ripping program it showed the last track to be 6 minutes long, yet in the audio CD player showed the song as 5 mins 29 seconds. In my ripper I then told it for that track, stop ripping at 5 mins 29 seconds, and it ripped the song perfectly!

Please let us know if these help!!
