CD-DVD-ROM Diagnositics?

By parkpointer ·
I have an oem CD DVD ROM drive by Toshiba Model SD-M1202 that came with my Dell. Currently it is a designated drive (F:\), but it fails to work, in fact it has the door/tray open all the time with no real way of keeping it closed accept by opening up the case and physically disonnecting the power.
According to Dell, I find that it is a plug n play device without a driver persae and have not been able to locate any suitable or workable diagnostics on this device. Has anyone out there ever come across with similar problem, and any possible solution aside from replacing the drive.

I was using Win2k OS on a client's Dell and was not even aware she had a DVD on board! (Duh)When I recovered from that shock, I checked with Dell and downloaded their drivers. But I kept getting the Error msg. that said I did not have the decoder and had to notify the mfg of the drive. So I went to the Toshiba web site and found (after a considerable amount of inefficient time) the driver for the particular Toshiba DVD drive that was installed. It was listed on MS Win2k compatible hardware list, even! Anyway, this did not seem to solve the problem and I had to tell the client that it probably never did work since she had never used it before I upgraded her whole system. If you ever resolve this issue I would love to hear about it!!!
