CD-R CD not working on some PC’s

    Locked

    by dcg ·

I have several Digital Venturis 166 PC that will not read CD-R that we copied to deploy new software on standalone machines. We have numerous other models of Digital PC that do not have any problems. We tried various ways of burning the CD ie HDD to CD CD to CD still not working on that model. Common sense would say its is the CD itself but it appears to be the same in some of the othrs, besides these are amongst some of the newer machines we have.

    Thanks

I hate to say this but your CD drives are “to good” for burnt CD’s I had the same problem and the only solution I found was to have two CD drives in my machine, the “newer” drives (over 8 speed) have problems with burnt roms, there maybe another wayround it but its the long way – there is a piece of software called “blindread” that should copy the contents of the cd to your new hard drives but that takes more time. try it from

I had the exact same problem with CD-R /CD-RW recognition but unlike answer #1 I had problems with my older CD-Roms (16X and under) All of my newer CD-Roms would read just fine. I finally upgraded all my Cd_Roms and the problom was solved. Here is abit of info I got from the Nero website, “Many CD-ROM drives can not read from CD-R / CD-RWs. Please check if your CD-ROM drive is multiread-capable. Only drives which are are capable can read from CD-RWs. IF in doubt, please ask the vendor of your CD-ROM drive.” Also if you are networked you can share one of the CD-Roms than can read them and install to your other machines that way. Hope this helps.

Well if the PCs are P166, then they are a few years old and probably have older style CDROM drives that are not multi-session capable, or they just have problems reading burnt cd’s as many older drives do. Panasonic and Mitsumi drives (slower than 16x) always have probs reading burnt cds.

Some CD ROM’S are fussy about the brand of
CD’S you use for burning. Try different brands. I have found that the KODAK GOLD
SERIES AND THE RICOH BRAND WORK BEST.

I have had similar experiences as above. I have even had some CD ROMS that would read some burnt CDs but not others. Check your write format. Most CDs > 4X will read Joliet. You might have to close the CD so that it will not accept a second session.Make sure ‘force to single track’ option is set. Check the original CD. Is there a discrepancy between the size reported when you look at the volume properties versus doing a ‘select all’ on the contents, then looking at the properties? If so, your software must support CD to CD mirroring, and turn off any option that wants to write the contents to a cache on the hard drive first.

I’m not sure if it would work for you but try cleaning the drives. It worked for me but I had to clean the drive again after a few weeks. I used a CD-ROM cleaner from 3Com.

It is absolutely NOT because of th CD as it works on other drives. This problem is belong to the CD drive. In CD drive we have a part called “the eye”. For some phisical reasons such as dirty (most of the time) or scratches (quite rarely), it becomes difficult to read CDs. I suggest you use a cleaning CD to clean the CD drive. If you are quite familiar with CD drive then you may want to open it to clean but most of the time the dirty is dust only so cleaning CD will does the job well. If the reason is because of scratches then we have to accept it with no way. Sometime, shake the drive will help it read the CD but for the next CD, nobody knows.

      Good luck,

I would try swapping a cd drive from one of the systems that does work to one that doesn’t. The drives in some may just be incompatable although it is something of a long shot.
Also, compare the settings between the system, BIOS, etc. If they areSCSI drives check those also. Good luck.

What I would try is to burn the CD at a slower rate, maybe 2x. The problem lies in your older CD Readers. YOu also might wish to try a different type of CD. By type, I mean different as in manufacture/brand and composition of CDR Disk. Also a high-quality Burner is a must. Plextor, Yamaha, HP etc. CDLMEDIA.COM is a great place to get Technical Information of the Composition of CDR Disks themselves.

The reason many CD-R disc will not work (particularly in faster drives) is because they are improperly balanced. “Better” brands of discs are less susceptible to this occurence, but the bottom line is that infinitessimal differences in weight across the disc will cause it to wobble in the drive causing drive slowdown or misreading of data. Cleaning the discs and drive often help offset problems such as these so clean first and, failing that, try a different brand of discs.

I ran into this same sort of problem when I first got m CD burner. There are three variables here: the CD burner, the CD media, and the CDROM. Some combinations of these three things just don’t work. For example, I burned several music CD’s to play in my car CD player. I had to try 4 brands of CD media before I found one that would work with that setup. The same CD media that worked there refused to work on a colleague’s older CDROM drive. But one of the brands that refused to work in my car worked fine in his CDROM.
Some CDR drive manufacturers suggest a specific brand of media to use with their drives…you may want to check that out. Otherwise, it’s unfortunately just a trial-and-error solution.

This problem has nothing to do with the way your CD is burnt. Quite a few older drives are unable to read a burnt CD (even some newer ones). Will your drive read a non burnt CD? If so it does not need cleaning. The only way around this problem is to buy a newer drive for that PC. This should be the cheapest solution for you. A new drive will only cost you about $25 and I assume the time you spend messing around with workarounds is worth more than that. Good Luck

DCG, the CD roms that you have are to old and to slow to read a burned cd, if you want to test this theory pull a CD rom out of one of the machine it does read in and put it in one of the machine it does not, If affordability is an issue in this case I recommend you get a backpack unit, house a CD rom that will read the cd then you can go from machine to machine that way and do the needed installs,( we keep a unit like this on hand at all times) Good luck to you….

It has come to my attention that many older cd-rom drives are not multiread compatiable, this is not to say that they cannot ever read cd-r media, there is a piece of software that I use, called a UDF reader which allows older cd drives to read these disks
