The usual answer for this problem is that the IDE bus drivers for the mother board are corrupt or not installed.

Start by going to device manager, and removing the Cd drive,
both IDE controllers, and the master IDE controller.

When you re-boot, windows should find the IDE bus, and install the drivers.

If that doesen’t work, I recommend that you download and install the IDE bus driver for your motherboard / chipset.

For help identifying what motherboard you have, and links to drivers, go to http://www.motherboards.org
      or http://www.wimsbios.com

You don’t say which is your OS.
Try to edit your autoexec.bat and remove any line about CD-ROM driver (place “REM ” in front of line).

Some older cd-roms will not be recognized by newer OS. Try going to the manufacturers website and downloading a ‘FIRMWARE’ upgrade.

They may also have a driver for your OS.
