It should. If the CD is at least a 4x or faster any generic ROM installation disk should set up the drivers and let 9x 'see' it. If it is slower than 4x it may be proprietary and need it's own controller card. In this case you would need to install one of the 3 imbedded within the 9x O/S [MKE; Sony and I dont know the 3rd but it's in there.] You could try www.driverguide.com and search for the specific driver for your CD_ROM.
If you have a DOS installation for this CD_ROM install it in DOS first and then 9x should see it also when it starts or by [Add/Remove Hardware].

Hope this helps ... H

Does your computer see the Cdrom when displaying the bios screen when booting up before any software is loaded? If not then the OS will not see it either.
Check your bios setup screen to see if the settings have changed
also
check that the connectors are not loose at the back of the cd rom.then when that is checked out you can then start looking at driver problem etc

do one of the following.

a) download drivers for your CD-ROM
b) re-install windows (and ALL components)
c) open your case and make sure your CD-ROM is connected correctly. try plugging in the cable the other way.

I had this same problem this week when I upgraded a computer from Win 95 to Win 98. Look in device manager and make sure you have the correct motherboard chipset drivers. If you don't you can actually install windows but when the computer sets up its hardware at the end of the windows installation, if you don't have the correct chipset drivers, you will be able to install windows, but it won't see the CD drive when it is done. Look at your hard disk controllers for any question or exclamation marks.

I rebooted the PC, BIOS recognized the CD-ROM, retried several known good disks, received same error meassage. Cleaned the drive and solved the problem.
