cd-rom and dvd-rom problem

By Eminent87 ·
Hi,

I've just installed a backpack cd writer and now my system won't detect my cd-rom and dvd-rom. I have tried uninstalling and the reinstalling but that didn't help. I'm running windows 2000 server, does anyone have any suggestions??

cd-rom and dvd-rom problem

by Eminent87 In reply to cd-rom and dvd-rom proble ...

the culprit behind this is the adaptec cd creator 4.0. after follow the advice of rbuser@hotmail.com I was able to resolved the problem. although he did not get credit for his answer on one of the previous posting, I want to thank him for his answer. below is what he wrote for those who are having the same problem.

"This "fix" has to do with a cdrom/cdrw hibernation problem, but it might apply to your situation, too, depending on the cdrw software you installed. Here's a quote from a newsgroup about it:

"Adaptec knows what the Hibernate and CD-ROM problem is with the 4.02 update
and it is a file called "cdralw2k.sys". When 4.02 is installed it adds
filters to the registry so that this file is used instead of "cdrom. sys".
Whenthe Adaptec software is uninstalled the registry is not reverted to use
"cdrom. sys" and hence the Hibernate and CD-ROM problem continues.

You have to edit the registry to stop the Adaptec driver after uninstall.
The critical keys that the software leaves behind after being uninstalled
are in:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E3 25-11CE-BFCl-087002B
El0318}

In this section you will find two keys called "UpperFilters" &
"LowerFilters" and you will need to delete both of these keys and reboot to
restore win2K to the default CD driver. You should also search for other
keys containing "cdralw2k" and "cdr4 2K" and delete these then delete these
two files AFTER the reboot. Note you-cannot delete the references to these
in "ENUM" as they are generated from the class driver, but they will not be
there after the reboot. ---------------------------------"

So, even though this refers to a hibernation problem, it may restore your normal cdrom.sys drivers so you can use cdroms." rbuser@hotmail.com

First, go to Device Manager and delete all signs of presence of your writer.
Second, force installing writer drivers
