cd-rom not detected

By JrGm48 ·
when trying to install win98se from clean boot, the cd-rom on my laptop an hp5700 will not detect. The cd-rom starts up but then fails. The drivers from my statup disk load, but when I go to \ drive it states no cd detected!

attempt to load by using bottable floppy with cd-rom drivers this should atleast tell you if the cdrom is working properly. If so then start pc and remove drive from device driver and reload with new drivers from the site of the manufacturer. also install all win98 patches or service packs catch any glitches that may be causing this.

You may need an HP specific boot disk.
The standard W98 boot Cd driver may not be able to operate your drive.

Check on HPs site for a dos driver for the CD.

Rather than trying to provide all the details here, there are articles in the TechRebuplic archives on creating custom boot disks.
You can also check out www.bootdisk.com for more information.

Is D for sure your cdrom?
I have seen that sometimes when you boot from a floppy it will make D a virtual drive, making E the cdrom

Try changing to an E: prompt. When the start up disk loads it creates a virtual ram drive which
takes drive letter Change to an E: type dir hit enter and your Win 98 should be there.

you could go into the cmos and set your first bootable device to cd-rom so it will read first before your hard drive or floppy.
