CD-ROM tray doesn't stop on eject

By Flashtube105 ·
I have a memorex CD-ROM drive. When ever I eject or open the tray, it comes out and goes back in. I have to be quick on the grab in order to stop it. I still use it but its anoying. Any suggestions on how to get it to stop when open or ejecting? Thank you.

It is likely a mechanical problem with the drive itself.
I would just spend the $25 (US) for a new drive.

I know its not worth fixing for a customer, but since it is my own I would prefer to fix it and learn by it. Thank you for your reply.

If this is still under warranty, I'd recommend replacing it under warranty. It sounds like the button press is being read as a dual press (overly sensitive button).

Here's the memorex troubleshooting tech support site (you need an login and password to get in however, and I do not know your specific model):

The FAQs or manuals may be helpful though.

The Problem Towards This Issue Is The CDROM Drive When U Push The Button Is Assume The Count Is Two Opening And Closing To A Mechanical Cmd
However It Could Also Be That The Cog Is Gammed And Can Only Pull Back In

Its Pure Hardware Problem
DoWhat Chas Said And Pay Like 15-20 and get a new cdrom

Since you want to see whats wrong, here are my CD internal repair hints.

The newer CD drives that I have opened up, have been a real pain.
They are designed for fast 1 time assembly.
You usually need to remove the fascia panel on the front of the tray, and the screws from both the top and the bottom of the drive.

Some of the bottom screws may have a different mark stamped into the metal.
This is to differentiate between the housing screws, and the screws that hold the mechanism to the housing.

Check for anything that blocks the tray mechanism from completing it's cycle.

If the tray does not come out all the way, the motor will continue to run, and the tray will cycle and close.

Check the internal gears for damage.

Check the micro switch or optical sensor that detects the tray open position.

When you re-assemble the mechanism, you often need to specifically align the tray and the gears so that the cycle completes properly.
There are too many different designs to provide an easy guide.

Enjoy the learning experience.
