CD ROM WONT WORK

By plt ·
One day my CDROM stopped working. Thinking that it just must be the age of this unit, I replaced the CDROM. Still doesnt work. Replaced data ribbon, checked setup. Everything looks right. I thought maybe the power supply was going bad and replaced that too. STILL DOESN'T WORK. It sees it, says it is working properly but it will not read anything off it. HELP- Gateway g6-200 win98

Just wondering , have you used a win98 boot disk and got access too your cdrom via dos prompt , if not you need too install the drivers that should have come on a diskette with cdrom , these are the dos drivers .

see if that cures your problem .

how is it hookup
on second ide connection on motherboard
or slaved too master on ide 1 on mother board

or too sound card ide connection , I hope not , these cards are getting rare .

will be back soon , trying too remmember how I cured myold p133 system , cause it did the same thing .

Make sure your junmpers on the cdrom drive are set properly for what you need it to be, slave or master. There's normally a third option called CSL or channel(or Cable?) select which a lot are set at in the box which I've never had work yet on a system I own. Otherwise the win 98 startup bootdiskette is a good test of any new cdrom.

What does the Device Manager show? Is the device installed and working properly (no conflicts)?

The device mgr shows it working properly. It just wont spin. When you insert a cd rom the light flashes on and off a couple of times then just goes out.

Set your boot sequence as A: C: and try booting with the Windows 98 boot-disk to see if it detects up your cd-rom.If it does, then replace the file "mscdex.exe" in the Windows/Command folder as it could be corrupted or damaged.
If the Windows 98 boot-disk does not detect your CD-Rom,the move your CR-Rom to another point on the IDE cable eg: Primary Slave or Secondary Mmaster or Slave.Make sure the CD-Rom is jumpered accordingly.
