CD-Roms and WinXP Prof

by vorsossion . Updated 22 years, 6 months ago

One day I shut down the computer and both CD-Roms were working. At the time they were on the same IDE ribbon and in the second IDE controller.

The next day device manager told me there was a problem: “Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)” and it stated this for both CD-Roms.

Ok, so I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them. Same problem. Uninstalled, defragged and rebooted. Same problem. I put each on their own ribbon and plugged them into a Promise card (adds two more IDE controllers) and had the same problem reported. Finally I tried running Norton Anti-Virus and it reported nothing.

So, before I go totally out of my mind and reformat the hard driveand start from scratch, I was wondering if I missed a step that anyone can think of. I find it hard to believe that both hard drives broke on the same night when the computer was off, and since I changed IDE ribbons and moved to different ports (each as master of their own now instead of sharing) I dont think its hardware either.

Thanks for the thoughts and comments.
