CD-RW installation

By Ggillcom ·
Pentium 900 MHZ,20Gb HD,128 RAM,DVD,CD-RW,floppy.
Installed CD-RW as master on the secondary controller, per manufacturer's recommmendation.Installed DVD as slave on the same controller.HD is by itself on the primary controller.
My DVD door will not open(it opened before). Also there is no icon for neither the "D" drive or the "E" dreive on my "COMPUTER".So I can not use the software to complete the installation. What did I do wrong.?

CD-RW installation

Hi,

If you're sure you got the jumpers in the right places for the master and slave, then its possible you've got the cable upside down.

I had a floppy drive once where the cable was keyed (so could only go on one way) and so was the port on the motherboard but it was actually keyed the wrong way! Maaaan... that was annoying!!

Cheers,
Tim.

Oh, and the other thing to check is the BIOS. Make sure that your BIOS can see the drives.

And make sure that all drives are set to "auto" for their configuration.

Cheers again,
Tim.

I have all drives set on Auto in BIOS.On startup after the memory test,it says that the secondary master and slave was not detected.Do you suggest that I change the keyed cable that came with the CD-RW to an unkeyed one? Also I could not find any label on my motherboard for Pin 1.Is it the side of the controller close to the power supply or the opposite one?

First check the CMOS panel to see if configuration that all drives are beitng detected by BIOS
Check the cable connections to make sure that you have the cable connected properly and then you will need to make sure that you have the jumpers on the cd-rw and the dvd set to master and slave correctly
Also make sure that your cables are connected to the motherboard connectors

CD-RW(master on the secondary controller).DVD )slave on the same controller)both devices set on AUTO in BIOS.Not detected by BIOS.I have checked all jumpers.Do you suggest that I replace the keyed cable that came with the CD-RW and install an unkeyed one.In that case where is Pin 1 on the controller?.There is no indication on my motherboard. Is it close to the power supply.

Take it a piece at a time. The other answers provided good advice. Try getting one drive to be recognized. If the door won't open it either does not have power, is jammed or is faulty. Hook up each drive separately designating each as a master on the secondary IDE port. Be sure you are reading the MA SL CS indicators on back of the drives vertically. Try different ribbon cables. If each works, change the jumpers and try both. Good Luck!
