I have a HP Pavilion 6736. It will not recognize a Philips external or internal CDRW. I get the message "you can not instal a CDRW on this computer". What is the problem?

It seems strange but try this just to make sure ,
if you are installing the CDRW as a stand alone ( master) make sure the jumpers are set correctly on the CDRW.If you are using it as a slave (second device on the same IDE cable, make sure the jumpers are set fort SLAVE.
Also if you are installing the CDRW as a Secondary Master you will need to go into the bios and set the secondary master to auto reboot and it should pick it up for what it is.

I could not find anything on HPs site about not being able to install a CD-RW drive on a Pavilion 6736.

Here is a link to HPs CD-RW trouble-shooting page

I would start by checking if there is a BIOS update available for your PC.
There are 3 different versions of the 6736, so make sure you get the correct BIOS update.

Do you get the error with just the drive connected?
Or, when you go to install the recording software?

Is this a home PC, or a PC on a company network?

If a networked PC, or a used PC from a corporation, it is possible that the error message has to do with a group policy that has been set to protect the companies data.
