CERC 1.5 SATA 6ch versus Adaptec 2820SA

By munsch ·
We have the aforementioned CERC with 2 separate 3-disk RAID-5 arrays on it. I know, I know. It wasn't heavily utilized when they set it up. I've inherited it.

I'm looking at the 2820SA as a possible replacement. Aside from the annoyance of completely backing up / restoring the system after installing a new controller, how much of a performance gain would I be looking at? The poor thing's a file server on a Windows Server 2003 system, in more or less constant use: the disks are never still. Throughput is a joke and the performance degradation as time goes on is getting painful.

Tangentally, can anyone point to a best-practices checklist for controller migration? This is the sort of thing i'd want to spend quite some time planning out before I move ahead.
