Change Compiled by: in Cisco Version

I onced worked for a guy who had somehow changed the name in the Compiled by: portion in a Cisco router Version information listing. For example, If I use a ‘show ver’, I get:
Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software
IOS ™ C3550 Software (C3550-I9Q3L2-M), Version 12.1(19)EA1, RELEASE SOFTWARE
(fc2)
Copyright (c) 1986-2003 by cisco Systems, Inc.
Compiled Thu 23-Oct-03 21:25 by yenanh

I’m curious if anyone knows how the “compiled … by yenanh” is changed, and if there are any legal implications in doing so?

First, why do you need to change the “Compiled by” appearance? It won’t give you anything. If you are going to sell these images, claiming that you are “compiler”, it will be a federal crime.

Making any modifications in the IOS image may cause changes in the image checksum and make the software unusable. So, to do so you should, probably, re-calculate and change the checksum. And even if this portion of the image is not used in the checksum calculation, it will be fraud and will violate Cisco’s Copyright. It wouldn’t be a problem if you use it internally and nobody see that, but as I understand you want to show it to people. That’s where problems could start…

Mike,
Your caution is well taken. My curiosity was completely innocent, but perhaps a little conceited. I had no intention of selling the images or using them outside of our network. I must admit I thought it was pretty cool that he had his name in all the router and switch configurations!
