Change reported OS version

By stamba ·
I'm running Windows Server 2003 which I got from Dreamspark (Channel8 on MSDN).
And I installed it on my home laptop.

Now, I have a problem.
My software (Data Backup) won't install on Server 2003. And I really, really need that backup.
Is there a chance to change reported OS version, so that the software I'm installing is tricked to think that installed windows is XP or vista? I'll need to change it back once I restore the data.

Please, I really need help.

How come

I've never seen his parrot? Don't pirates have parrots?

(Gotta love the way that rolls off the tongue!)

Only Some Do Boxy

by The Scummy One In reply to How come

the others usually dont have enough money for a parrot.. So, I guess its just the successful Pirates, not the Loser Pirates like the OP

I'm glad you cleared that up for me.

Sounds about right. PBS aired a piece the other day about pirates in the Malaysian Straights. Started with a guy haggling in the market over the price of a machete for his work.

Interesting story, wasn't it? (No text)

It is not pirated version nor it is test version. Microsoft started Dreamspark action. Microsoft gives free software to students, as long as you verify as a student!
You can check out dreamspark here
or simply google it!!!
And I DON'T use pirated software.

So, now that we have cleared that up, is there a way to do what I asked before?
I can't just buy (because it cost a lot for srvr03), and I need to do this once, just to restore my backed-up data.

Again, please help. And again, NOT a pirated version.

Scummy, it looks legit.

Having said that, the time to check if your software is compatible is before you load a new OS, not after.

Try installing the backup app in Safe Mode.

Lacking that, you may have to put the original OS back on, restore the data, and save it using the built-in Windows backup utility. You should then be able to restore it with Server 03's b/u tool.

Odd that your app won't install on Server 03 since it's basically a superset of XP. Have you contacted the software vendor?

Have you tried

by Tig2 In reply to Pirate???!?!!!?!??!

Going out to the Dreamspark site and checking there? I would think that someone would have had this issue in the past and might have an answer posted.

Sorry- I'm not much help. I drive an OS X box.

That is why you have to watch yourself

When you use a backup package that uses a proprietary format, you are just begging for trouble.

Not a lot of help, I know, but might help you head off problems in the future.

Best bet, find a friend that will let you restore onto their computer, then burn the data to a dvd or copy to a thumb drive and bring it back to your system.

Maybe TweakNT will help

by thomasso In reply to Change reported OS versio ...

TweakNT is a utility that allows you to remove or readd the timebomb and change the edition of any NT OS.
