Changing Administrators Password

By jwaters ·
I should have more specific. I work for the Dept. of Public Safety. I have to change the administrators password on a Netware System were the Police Chief, as been forced to retire. He is currently the Administrator. Town Officals, and the Acting Chief would like me to secure the network and nformation. How can I change the Administrators Password? I am not expecting the current Administrator to be very helpful.

Sounds like you may have a disgruntled admin to deal with. I'm assuming you're running NetWare 4 or 5.

First off, you will need administrative rights to the admin object. Then you can launch nwadmin and go to the admin object to change the password.

You will also want to check the "rights to other objects" for his _standard_ account and make sure it is not admin equivalent. Also check for any accounts that may not be vaild; i.e. backdoor accounts. A lot of admins will create backup admin accounts that will grant them access in case the primary account gets locked, etc...

If he is leaving (especially if it's not on his terms) you may consider running some sort of security assessment tool againist the tree. I use Kane and it will show you if he has given any other user/s or created another account for himself withadmin. priv's. You may want to consider looking into something like this to cover your @#$%.

I think the thing you're looking for is called setpass.nlm. If you do a search from Yahoo it will show you a few places to get it. I've used it in the past for similar situations. You'll need access to the server console and need to know the context that your admin object is in. Set the bindery context of the server to the same context as your admin user. Once it's set, you load the nlm and have the option of setting it to nothing or changing it entirely. If you can't find it, contact me via email, I have a copy.

We just went through this at my company when a network manager left. You can change Admins password from the Admin account the same way you would change any other password. What you want to be carefull of are three things:
1) That he has not created/altered any other accounts to use for backdoor access.
2) That you adjust any other applications that may use the admin password to log in to the tree, ie. Backup Exec, Email systems, NT integration login, Webservers, etc.
3) If you offer any remote access. Make sure that you change any passwords to other accounts that he may have had access to.

If you are not sure of everything to check I would hire a consultant to do a security audit for you. You work for an organization where the security concerns are greater than most.

Is your real question that you need to change the Administrator's password but you don't know it? And hence you basically need to hack your own system? If so, you ought to contact Novell.
