Cisco 831 : ip addresses may not be configured on L2 links

Hi there,
Can any one please help to configure the ethernet ports of a cisco 831.
It gives me the following error when I try to configure the fast ethernet port.
ip addresses may not be configured on L2 links
Is there a way around????
Please help

It looks like you have to configure the ethernet ports, I connected a laptop to port #1 on the router and then configured ethernet 0 and gave it an ip address and poof!! it was up and running! I did an sh ip int br and the port and line protocol were up for ethernet 0 and Fast ethernet 1 like the ports are linked. I have not figured out how to configure them as switchports yet, but at least I can give the ports ip addresses. These ports don't act the same as ports on a 2950 or 3550, meaning you configure vlan 1 or setup new vlans and assign ports to those vlans. Anyway, I hope this helps, if you figure out how to configure the ports as switchports, post a reply here. thanks,
