cisco 851W dropping internet connection

by quantumriff . Updated 19 years ago

I have a Cisco 851W I configured following a guide here (changing my IP’s and passwords and a few other things, of course). I have it setup and working great, however, it occasionaly looses its connection to the cable modem on FastEthernet 4. IF we switch off the router, then turn it back on, it does not turn on. I have to Unplug the power cord from the wall, then plug it in, and then it turns back on. Sometimes, this will bring the connection back up, but not always. I also have tried unplugging the cable between the modem and the router. Again, sometimes it gets its info, sometimes it doesn’t. when it is not working, a “show ip route” only shows the local lan subnet (naturally). When it decides its feeling generous enough, it comes back up and all is working fine.. any ideas? I have tried swapping the cable. The problem is intermittent, so it is hard to troubleshoot. (although the not turning back on with the power switch concerns me that there is a hardware problem).
