Cisco Ping problems...

By ccthompson ·
I have 3 Vlans in my Cisco equipment, all defined in my router.

10.1.1.x (admin) (Network Equip.)
10.1.10.x (data) (PCs)
10.1.11.x (voice) (IP phones)

I have a switch here, 3650), and a switch in the other warehouse 2950).

From my PC,, i can ping the switch here( but cannot ping the other warehouse (

I can however ping other PCs connected to that switch in the other warehouse.(,ect...)

The warehouses are connected to each other via Cisco Wireless Bridges ((, here) ( other warehouse)), but i dont think thats the problem. Cause when I go to the switch itself, and connect via COM1(hyperterminal) i cannot even ping its own address, or anything else. i have tried to change the IP address to every single vlan, but still doesnt seem to work.

Its very odd that I can ping devices that are connected to that switch, such as PCs, access points over there, and the actual IP phones. But cannot ping the switch itself.

Any suggestions?

It is possible to turn off the ping reply to some networking equipment. Cisco has a very well written document located here:

It also discusses troubleshooting pinging. I would recommend spending an hour or so studying it.

First of all, check the default gateway settings on your warehouse 2950 switch. If you are able to ping that switch from your 3650 switch, but can not ping it from PCs, it's 100% problem with default gateway in remote switch.

In the Catalyst 2950 you should have something like:

ip default-gateway

Good luck,

CCNP, CCDP, CCSP, Cisco Voice, Security+, etc.
