COMM Port ****

By thorpe322 ·
Here's the situation. PC is a Dell GX 260. It came from Dell with Windows XP on it but when i took it to the clients site, they tell me "oh yeah, the program we need to run on this pc will ONLY run on Windows NT". After getting a license set up, I downgrade the system to NT 4.0 w/ SP6. Then the problems started. NT is only listing COMM1, which is needed for the specialty software the PC was needed for. COMM1 port is being used by the serial port on the back of the PC, which there is only one of. My problem now is getting the modem to work. When I add a COMM port, the modem is unable to locate the new one. As a control test I disabled the specialty software and pointed the modem to COMM1. Still nothing, unable to initialze. The modem is a Conexant HCF V.90 56K Data Fax PCI Modem. I was able to find some NT 4.0 drivers for this model on Dell's site. I tried setting it up on COMM3 with I/O 03E8 and on Interrupt 4. Did not work. I guess my question is, am I missing something in the configuring of NT or is this just NOT an NT compatible modem? Thanks all!

You definitely do not want to use IRQ-4 as the MODEM interrupt.
Use almost anything else except IRQ-7 , IRQ-14 and IRQ-15
The standard setup is to use IRQ-3 for the MODEM with COM-2 and 02F8 I/O port.
Let the special software have COM-1 and IRQ-4 for itself, I assume 03F8, also for COM-1.
Does this PC use a mouse, in this application?
If so, I assume it is a PS-2 mouse on IRQ-12.
Regards, Chris

Hi

I had the same problem with the same modem on a Dell Optiplex GX 50 machine running Win2k. I had also tried creating new comm ports, which the modem was unable to access. The solution was to uninstall the modem, remove the newly created port, recreate a new comm port, then install a different Conexant modem model.

Hope this helps

http://www.modem-drivers.com/drivers/32/32210.htm
or
http://www2.driverguide.com/uploads/uploads11/16410.html
are Conexant HCF V.90 56K Data Fax PCI Modem drivers and hopefully one will work for you. These files are on Driverguide.com and asks for a password, just use login:drivers pw:all
OR
scroll through all of the Conexant drivers at:
http://www2.driverguide.com/cgi/drifound-new.pl?ID=conexant&NAME=Conexant to see if any of those listed will work.

You will need to uninstall any ports you've added and uninstall the current modem drivers you have installed.
