Compaq Laptop...

By peetree ·
I recently acquired an old Compaq Armada 1700 for a very attractive price...free! Anyhow, it came with the HDD totaly wiped, the previous owner had little knowledge of formating and just went C:\format. I have windows 98SE and would like to get itrunning for the sole purpose of having my mother use it for Word.

Here is a link to the HP/Compaq driver support page for the Armada 1700 series.

It looks like they have all the files you will need.

I recommend that you read over the article that they have in regards to installing W98 on their laptops.

Also, you should extract any archives and copy them onto the hard drive (C:\Drivers) or burn them onto a CD.

Try to go to another Win98 machine and then go to start-settings-control panel. Then go to the Add/Remove Software Icon. From there go to the third tab for Create Boot Disk. This disk will create a boot disk with CD Rom Drivers. Put the disk in and select "Boot with CD Rom Support." From there, put WiN98 SE in your CD Rom and then run the install from there...

I purchased a computer from BestBuy without recovery disk with it. It was a closeout. I called Compaq and requested a recovery disk. They were very nice. I had to give them the serial number, etc. It cost me $15.00. Hope this helps. I have heard horror stories regarding Compaq. I have owned a couple and have always found them to be very helpful and professional. Good luck.
