Our company sticks to the IBM NetVista line, Other companies that collegues work with have used the Dells, Compaq's, and HP's. What exactly are you looking for? Pretty much an 800 mghz or faster is quite capable of doing any office and programmingtask. Faster is always better. Disk space should be at the server level not local since backups are more regularly done there.

If you are talking unix-based... then I'd recommend IBM or HP. Windows-based... Dell, IBM or HP.

Yes, a lot of companies use Compaq's... if you go with Compaq make sure you've got an authorized support resource for hardware parts and repairs.Actually the same with any brand-name computer manufacturer (some parts will be proprietary).

Make sure the resources for support are available in your area (or better yet, within your company) and choose a server manufacturer from there.

Well, the stats I see these days pretty much says that Dell is easily the sales leader. HP (including Compaq) is in second. Exactly which system you need, of course depends upon the OS and software you will be using and the functionality you need.
