Computer connects to internet but browsers wont search

By acampbell25 ·
I have a computer that is hooked up to my router and is getting an internet signal. Other programs have updated (AVG included) and Skype is connected. When I open IE, it only says "Detecting proxy settings" and holds tight. Here is what I have done so far to fix this issue:

Installed and ran AVG and reboot

ipconfig/reset and /renew

Ran Winsock XP Fix 1.2 and reboot

netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ip reset reset.log
and reboot

Installed IE7
Have done both settings for LAN in options (Auto detect and unchecked)

The computer will not allow me to install MalwareBytes in or out of safe mode or even in diagnostic startup through msconfig.

I have never ran into this problem before, and I have had many people say that it sounds like malware, but I can't get a malware scanner to run on the machine.

I need some help with this

Have you tried?

While in safe mode will IE run?

What about your LAN setting in Internet Options (Control Panel->Internet Options->Connections tab)? Are you set to auto config?

You can also use Firefox on a thumb drive running Portable Apps to get you to the internet for an online scan. I like Trend Micros Housecall - because it can run in safe mode.

Let me know if it helps.

Running in safe mode

by acampbell25 In reply to Try renaming

I do not know if it will run in safe mode. I am assuming you mean w/networking. I will try it and let you know if it does.

I will also try renaming the file to see if I can get it to run with a new name.

I will post back when I have the answers.

renaming of file

by acampbell25 In reply to Running in safe mode

Well, I renamed the installation file "mbam-setup.exe" to "pictures" and it is all installed now, then to run it I renamed "mbam" to "123456mbam". I tried to run it under normal conditions but it kicks me out, so I will try and do it under diagnostic mode instead of safe mode. If that doesn't work I will then do it in safe mode with networking and see if it will run that way.

Updates to come.
