    Computer has freaked out

    Locked

    by scarlettal ·

I’m not quite sure how to explain this problem. The computer was acting kind of wierd…odd errors….this morning, so I shut it down. When it came back up, I noticed all the icons in Windows Explorer are not right. Almost everyone is showing half of one type of icon, and half of another. I’ve rebooted and shut down again. I even ran regedit, as when it was coming back up it said there was a registry problem, then fixed itself (supposedly). Has anyone seen this before? Or have any idea what to do?

System management programs such as Norton Utilities are handy tools, but if you don’t want spend any money now try downloading the regclean from Microsoft site and run it every now and then. It checks and repairs errors to the registry.

      Good Luck!

I had already run regclean after this happened….didn’t do a thing.

you might want to try running the scanreg /restore command and select an earlier copy of the registry

Thanks! It didn’t fix this problem, but it’s a good thing to know.

I agree with the other answers that it sounds like a corrupted registry, but I would take one step farther back and ask what corrupted it. In addition to registry utilities, I would do a hard drive scan to see if you have an impending drive failure.

The self-repair facility is often overly optimistic. When it says it fixed itself, it often means that it restored a normal file structure without regards to the contents of that file.

I would try all the suggestions offered but you may be looking at a re-install of the OS to solve the problem.

Scandisk wasn’t finding anything at all. I wanted to avoid a re-install of the OS if at all possible.

Insert ERD in the floppy drive and reinstall the files from it and it will repair the corrupted files.Agood tool is TWEAK UI on the win95 or win98 in tools\resource kit is a power tool that will fix current problems.

Could be possible that you have/had a virus on your computer. Have you done a good search for one? (ex. a virus scan through DOS with Virus-boot disks)
I’ve never really heard of this type of problem coming up before though.
After your registry ‘fixed’ itself did that seem to solve it, or is it still kinda doing weird things?

If you’re still really worried about it, maybe the best thing to do, but not the most liked, is to save as much info from the computer that you can and just do a clean reinstall.

I’ve had my Icons go crazy before the Tweak UI did do a good job of cleaning them up and restoring them. you should update your Virus Defs and scan the HD. Then clean your Registry with Regclean form Microsoft or Regcleaner, Freeware from Jouni Vuorio, you can get Tweak UI and regcleaner at Nonags under powertools. I have had good luk with both of these tools. Here is the URL http://nonags.gargantuan.com/pwrt32.html
      good luck

Thanks! Tweak UI did a great job. Regcleaner seems to be a much better utility than regclean. And I found a couple of other great tools on the web site, too.

Uninstall the drivers for your grafikcard.
Uninstall the grafikcard from the systemmaneger. And reinstall it again.

      Best of luck
