Computer Name Alias How to?

By fackeid ·
Hey one my clients question
- He is having one computer
Name = ABCD
Ip = 10.102.68.114

When he pings for ABCD it works fine
ping ABCD ...
....... Successfully (10.102.68.114)

Now he wants to change the computer name for his reference only and NOT ACTUALLY RENAMING THE COMPUTER.

I mean he want to use "sarvesh" instead of "ABCD" as a computer name FOR HIS REFERENCE ONLY.

then he is going to ping like

ping sarvesh
.... Successfully (10.102.68.114)

I remind he is not Physically changing the computer name from ABCD to sarvesh.

Anybody please tell me how to make it possible.

DNS or hosts

by p.j.hutchison In reply to Computer Name Alias How t ...

If the user is in a domain, he could add a Host record to the DNS with the the name of his choice using his IP address.

If in a workgroup, then you can add the host entry to the HOSTS file in C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc folder (and other computers he needs access)

DNS Alias

by kormathaw In reply to Computer Name Alias How t ...

This is an old subject, but for anyone with this question. Configuring the DNS records is something that must be done by the Administrator of your DNS server. They will add a CNAME record to the DNS table. Or as stated above the Host file takes priority over DNS, so you could update the host file on any computer that needs to know the computer's alias.
