Computer reboots when I go online
Lockedby linda_lareau · about 22 years, 11 months ago
I have a pentium II 350 processor and 64 mb of ram. Using Windows 98 SE, Email program using Outlook 2000, I connect using dialup, and stay resistant programs are norton antivirus. I also have an emulation card to access the AS/400 system. I havealready replaced the 1st internal modem with a Zoom 56k PCI modem and still have the same problem of my computer rebooting when I go online and retreive my email (occasionally). This only started happening when I got this new / faster computer

I would try removing the emulation card and seeing if that makes any difference. It sounds like you might have a power supply problem which reacts adversely to the extra load of an online modem. If you have used the same software hardware ( ie modemand emulator card ) build before and removing the emulator fixes the problem. The power availability needs looking at.

Emulation could be the problem as stated in answer 1,I would suggest that you check the internet connections in the tools menu of your browser and see if it is configured to allow the dial to make the connection.Sound to me you have a dual operationgoing on that has to do with configuration and memory.

Why are you using an emulation card? IBM Client Access Pack has software emulation. You should check into that, maybe taking away the need for that card and the possibility of a conflict. Have you checked device manager to see how IRQs are issued? You may have a com port conflict or something of the like. Good luck.

The previous answers suggest hardware problems and solutions.
This problem can also be caused by software. To try and indentify the cause of the problem, try disabling Power Managerment in the BIOS. Usually you hit F1 or F2 to access the systemBIOS settings during the initial boot. There is usually a power section in the BIOS. DISABLE THIS. Press whatever key to “save changes and exit”
The second thing you can do is remove Advanced Power Management from windows. To do this open the system icon inside the control panel. Click on the device manager tab. At the top select, view devices by connection. The top item on the list will be Adavnced Power Management. Select it then push the remove button at the bottom of the screen. Reboot the computer.
DOING THIS WILL BRING UP THE “ITS NOW SAFE TO SHUTDOWN YOUR COMPUTER” SCREEN EVERY TIME YOU SHUTDOWN.If the problem is gone, re-enable power management in the BIOS. If the problem is still gone, reinstall windows APM. Goto control panel add

(continued) new hardware…Let windows search for new Plug N Play device.
after it has found it, click the details button to make sure it has APM listed.
Finish the install. If it starts rebooting again…Format/reload
If that has no effect, you can try moving the modem to another PCI slot on the MBD. This will cause the modem to be redetected and reinstalled. Try to connect again.
Then try removing all the cards (sound, video emulator) except for the modem. Try connecting. If it works add in the cards one at time, and try connecting to see which one is causing the reboot. If it is the last card, remove all the cards again. save a different card to insert last. If it reboots again, after the last card is inserted, it probably a power supply problem.
If the same card is causing the reboots it is probably a bad card. Try the bad card in another slot. If it still reboots, try to replace the bad card.
If none of this has any effect check for BIOS updates for the MBD.

The best thing to do in this situation is to Go into your setup and go to your PCI settings and put the IRQ interupts on auto not assigned. Then go and uninstall all of you components that require assigned IRQ interupts.(Sound, Video, Modems with emulators, things of this nature)Then reboot and reinstall them all again. That way you have a better chance of not conflicting anything.

win you start having the computer crash or reboot or freeze win you go on line that is a sign that your
wsock32.dll is corrupted
go to find files and folders
and type in wsock32.dll
and see
1st is there only one
if there is more renameall but one something else make shure that you leave the one in
c:\windows\system alone
2nd make sure that the one in windows\system
is 40 k
if it is larger or smaller
it is probably corrupted
3rd get the latest wsock32.dll upgrade from Microsoft and replace it just incase
that will just maybe fix it

I had this very same problem with a Zoom PCI modem in my system. Zoom’s support didn’t help so I replaced it with a USR Winmodem and haven’t had any trouble since.
