Computer Repair & Maintenance

By premjis ·
I want to start Computer Repair & Maintenance from home. I know qite a bit about computer diagnosis and repair. But I am sure I may need good tools and diagnostic software to find computer failts and repair them efficiently and quickly.

Any idea I should and shouldn't buy.

Anybody who has started what I want to start can feel me in the Pros and Cons.

Thank you,

Sam

I agree w/ dmiles about PC Certify Pro! I've been in the biz for a few years now and have found that a majority of the problems you will be facing (if you're customer base is average home users) are software/driver related. Arm yourself with a portable virus scanner (Trend Micro has a great FREE! standalone virus scan/removal utility here....

A lot of my customers just have slow, bogged down systems from accumulated adware, spyware, etc. and a gazillion tasks and processes running. Ad-aware and the like are great to have in your compilation. And last, but not least you need a fully stocked arsenal of Device Drivers!!! Go to http://www.driverdisks.com
They sell pre-compiled CD-ROM's with drivers (even hard-to-find ones) and handy little utilities such as spyware/adware removers and tools for removal of specific virus variants. The price is just right, too.

Hope this helps!

another couple of programs that can help identify the computer better is Sandra System 2003 and for cleaning up log files cache and such, Window Washer.

As previously mentioned Drivers. You may want a portable jaz or usb hard drive to back their systems up before you start repairs, I have found on several occasions that due to time constraints and repair rates, it is faster and more economical to re-format and reload.(This should only be used as a last resort.)
If everything is on the C drive and they have no other drive suggest to them to create a partition for the HD and have the data go on to the new partitioned drive.

Remember repairs is an on going learning experince the more you do the better you'll become.
Good luck

Do yourself a favor and buy the book, "Fix your own PC" by Mclaughlin, sasser and Ralston. I'm not sure of the latest edition. It has a great section on troubleshooting. You will like it. I'm in no way involved with this book. :)
