computer shut down

By balloonguy1972 ·
I am currently running windows xp on a compaq presario 4400us. When I run a program from my cdrom, the computer shuts down instantly. There is no warning and it does not go through the normal shutdown process. Is this a hardware or software problem and what causes this. This does not happen to music cds.

computer shut down

In Windows XP, instead of coming up with a Blue Screen of Death on a fatal error, XP defaults to automatically reboot your computer. You can change this setting by doing the following:

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

2. On the Advanced tab, click Settings under "Startup and Recovery".

3. Click to clear the "Automatically restart" check box under "System failure",
and then click OK. The error message on a blue screen should remain on the
screen so you canrecord the error information.

Hope this helps!
