Configuring a laptops dialup adapter aft

By davinlee ·
I'm trying to configure a laptop that is running MSN as its online Service to my NT4.0 Server. Once I load the NT network protocols to the laptops windows98 operating system and connect to the NT4.o server, the Internet explorer and Outlook Expressno longer works on the dialup adapters TCP/IP connection. The only way to access MSN is through the NT server. I need this laptop to use the dialup when its away from the office but can't seem to get MSN to work when its away from the office (not connected to the NT server). The network configuration seem to disable or reconfigure the Dialup Adapter. I have contacted MSN and they were no help in solving this problem. can any one enlighten me on this issue. Davin

Shot in the dark - is your NT 4.0 server going through a router and/or proxy server to get to the Internet? If so, then it is not your dial-up connection but IE itself that is having the problem. You can change the IE connection settings by right clicking on your desktop IE icon and going to Properties. Click the Connection tab - if it's set to use a LAN connection and/or proxy server, you need to reset this - when you are not connected to the NT server, edit the connection to use your regular dial-up settings; when you are connected, edit again to use the LAN/proxy connection. Hope this helps!

Sounds like a DHCP issue along with Proxy. when hooked up to the NT server you need to obtain a DHCP IP address or assigned IP for that matter. To access the internet seperate from that. I recomend attempting on IE goto TOOLS\internet \Connections tab and simply change the settings in there for proxy and non proxy as you change network types. One is internal and the other External. Not gonna happen any other way.

Have you tried creating an Alternative Hardware Profile for the Laptop with the Disable Network logon option checked?

I setup my systems like this all the time. During the initial configuration setup you must answer yes to the question do you travel with computer or it want work no matter how hard you try to make it work.

Uninstall and start over.
